Senior Fashion- how to diversify your look during your photoshoot

Senior Fashion- how to diversify your look during your photoshoot

I like girls who don’t exactly play by the rules, especially with fashion. Take a few risks, I promise you it will pay off. Even if you’re not ready to totally get WAY out of the box, even the smallest of details will make a huge difference!
Andrea didn’t know at the time of her shoot I would be using her as this fashionista example, I didn’t even know it, but looking back at her shoot now it’s clear she put together some killer looks and there’s some things you could learn from her and what she rocked during her Summer and Fall Senior Photoshoots (yes- she’s so fab she did 2 shoots!)

First off, this green “dress” she’s wearing. It’s an oversized sweater. She bought it larger than her normal top size so it would be the perfect slouchy, comfy sweater dress. So get creative with pieces and sizes! The boho headpiece- it’s just a necklace! As she was putting it on she looked like a little gypsy with it on her head, so we snagged some fun shots!

This bold pop of color in her next look was great and notice the accessories- a few bracelets and watch. It’s these tiny things that add extra texture and bling to your portraits, so don’t forget parts of your wardrobe that you think will be hidden- we’ll find a way and a pose to show them off!

Ok! I’ve waited long enough to talk about my FAV outfit she wore! These overalls and boots. The floral, bright crop top still keeps it feminine but those tall boots with the pants rolled up bring that edge back! I can’t get over this look! It’s unexpected and that’s what’s going to make your portraits stand out! Plus, she’s got moves- I mean look at her just rockin those baggy boyfriend cut overalls!

Ok, moving on from my current obsession of overalls- This dress is a great chic look and really mixes it up from the looks we’ve seen so far. It’s something a little more sophisticated, put together, and then paired with the heel, it takes it to a level we haven’t seen yet! Diversity is key to get the most out of your Senior Portraits!

Next we have this super casual look. When I say casual I don’t mean boring though, the ripped jeans and layered necklace keep it interesting! It’s meant to be a carefree, summer look paired with the easy going, sun kissed location.

And lastly. So dreamy. This white, soft dress with this floral crown. Whimsy will never get old to us at AJBC! The look turns very editorial / fashion when she gets in the water! And THIS is what you want for your Senior Experience! Something that doesn’t FEEL or look like a typical portrait. The days of turn, smile, click are gone, and so are the “rules” of fashion, because true fashion has no rules and no limits.

the Professional side of senior portraits

math guru, drum line musician meets fashion model

marysville high school senior photographer.jpg

Like a paint brush, I watch as Grant creates a visual masterpiece with numbers, letters, and shapes on the white board. Just like an artist he is creating something deeper than what most will see or understand. Where I see black marks that most of us might be able to identify as math, Grant sees the future. And I’m beyond thankful that while looking at him, I also see the future, and realize that because of him, and people like him, our world is going to continue to get better.
Grant has passion, a drive to look deeper, the ability to problem solve, and a willingness to share that with others. I was lucky enough to be one of the ones he’s shared his talents with, so I can say first hand- this guy is going places.
Grant and his amazing mom came to my studio to plan his session and were adamant- they wanted unique, custom, out of the box perspectives, and something that reflected who Grant was, and also what his mom saw in and around him. Grant just wanted to make sure we incorporated his love for Math.
Together we created this senior session that shows Grant as the true professional he was meant to be- suit and all. We then changed it up, loosened it up, and celebrated who he is as young musician and drummer. After that I watched as he turned in to this model, brushing the hair back as it was blowing in the wind. And lastly something casual to capture him simply and honestly as he is at this age.
So AJBC + Grant (and his sweet mom) + ( math + drums + cityscapes + grunge) = 1 awesome Senior Session of 2016. Take a look at a few shots:

guy Senior Session with Fashion and Freighters

Senior guy session in the woods, on the lake, and with his high school sweetheart.

Abandoned houses, historic railroad ties, and young love.

When I first met Adam he told me a LONG list of things he wanted to include in his session- one of them being Owen Wilson.
As reality goes, I couldn’t get Mr. Wilson but I did get some other awesome stuff we talked about- Freighters, his car, his beautiful girlfriend, water and the country.
I’m pretty sure every spot we took Adam to he had never been to before, which makes me happy. It keeps things fresh for me, and makes the whole thing an adventure for him.
Check out the adventure we went on- from an old abandoned farm house, to cliffs out in the country, to freighters on the St. Clair River, and ending on a walkway built out of historic railroad ties. All the things he wanted, secretly wrapped up into a few hours and various awesome portraits.

urban exploring- a port huron senior session

Every great session forms from a story. It's how your session is built.
Except this one. This one starts out with a quick phone call and the rest is history.
Meet John, the typical guy who is forced in to this Senior Picture business by his mom. Never mind the fact John looks like he’s about to walk off and start his Calvin Klein career any day now, he just wasn’t interested.

So mom calls me and says no need to meet to chat, I trust you, he’ll probably let us do 2 outfits, that’s it, let’s do this as soon as possible, I'll wait to hear from you on location.
So I have no story to go off of, and my creativity sprouts from stories, until I hear- ok, thanks, see you soon, oh, and by the way, my son and his friends like to explore abandoned buildings.
And THAT is where this session finally starts.

NONE of us want to go and do something we’re not in to, so it’s my top priority to make sure this session it’s laid back, it’s fun, it’s cool, and it speaks to him.

So abandoned buildings speaks to him… hmm… ok. Well, I’ve also spent some time in some pretty sketchy places, so I felt like I could understand that language.

I decided to take them here- an over grown railroad track that curves between 2 abandoned buildings on the back side of downtown that comes complete with weird doors that lead to god only knows where and even weirder noises that make you question why you’re there, and still not leaving.
We had a blast. I don't know if mom ever stopped smiling as she watched her son take his first steps in to adulthood, and me and my assistant couldn't get enough of their laid back personalities while we took a session with hardly no planning and watched it grow in to such an awesome collection. Every turn brought something new, a new color, a new backdrop, new light, and new reasons for us to still not understand why this guy looking like a model didn’t want to do this in the first place!
