LEE.BA.TROY Studios Editorial Shoot on Drummond Island

Inclusion

I bottled up the freezing cold water of Lake Huron as it rolled in, softly washing the rocks along the shore of our 300 ft tiny cabin. The same Lake I would swim and bathe in as a child. It never felt like Michigan, but it somehow still feels like going home.

Next I walked up the limestone stairs my husband and I put in by hand that leads to a dead birch tree we still haven’t cut down so we can harvests it’s bark for fires and the wood peckers can continue to enjoy it. I peeled back it’s skin and put it into my cauldron for a special fire ceremony later back at my home. I asked my husband to gather something significant from the property and he chose the milkweed pods we leave standing for the monarch butterflies.

Lastly we drove to the rustic campground I would stay at with my parents and grandparents every 4th of July to collect the rare bit of sand that lines the shores. Nothing has changed there, not the limestone fire pits, not the flat patches of grass tucked between the hemlocks overlooking the tiny islands that are scattered through out the bay. Yet somehow, everything in my life outside of that very park has managed to change.

I describe to you the location I chose to gather materials for the Lake Formed Inclusion pendant necklace LEE.BA.TROY Studio will make for me.
Through the alchemical process of hand-casting molten metal, the Artist, Kristy, transforms water, sand, and natural elements into one-of-a-kind wearable sculptures that embody both artistry and nature.

These pieces and the process to create them are not just stories to listen to, but stories to hold. After seeing  LEE.BA.TROY share about them on her social media I was intrigued to tell the story through Photographs in an Editorial Shoot. I asked about her process to get a clear vision for the shoot and her response was both inspiring and emotional. These pieces are not mass produced (even if they are not custom inclusions) but crafted with intention, purpose, and respect for every element involved. Kristy shared with me, “Collecting sand and water from a location- this is a ceremony of sorts for me. It’s also natural EMDR because I walk the shore and scan left to right for treasures with mindful breathing and taking in the sound of the lapping waves or other sounds.”
If it’s an Inclusion piece, meaning it’s custom made and includes natural elements of your choosing, anything from bridal flowers, birch bark, hand written letters, to cremains can be added. During this process Kristy takes a moment of silence to honor the keepsake inclusion.

Once home I wrote a letter, a little reminder to myself, and burnt it along with the bark and pods. The next day they were sent to LEE.BA.TROY Studios where Kristy will work her magic.

EDITORIAL

Editorial Spreads in magazines often capture the essence of a moment, tell an intriguing tale, share secrets with the viewer. These shots are not meant to sell to you, they’re meant to invite you into their world. That’s exactly what felt right for this shoot. Items this special don’t need marketing, they need their story told- just like we all do.

Yet. I am still a business woman, working with other businesses, and selling is a part of staying alive in business. What I love about shoots like this for my clients is they do both- they share, genuinely, from a deep place, and because of that connection and emotion they also sell. Moving forward I’m excited to bring this approach to more of clients, as it feels far more honest, playful, and like a gift to the viewer and shopper. They aren’t being sold to, they are being shared with and shown, like a human being.

Product

And for the sake of traditional marketing I did get some solid product shots as well that still hd an artistic edge to them.

Lady of the Lake

In my head I started to develop this character, a woman of mystery who’s tied to the Lake. These pieces feel magical, etherial, and mysterious to me. What they hold is stories, memories, history, love, hope, happiness, grief, until it is all transformed, secretly tucked away in silver, becoming a comforting talisman that lies upon our chests, still being shared with the rest of the world as a unique little nugget that shines in the light.

To get to know this “Lady of the Lake” better I let the thoughts pour out into a poem, a very rough draft, which highly influenced how I shot the rest of this Editorial Set. I imagines her sneaking out into the night, unseen, to visit the Lake, unburdened by man.
These images were highly edited to have a more “character” like feel to them.

Fine Art

The last thing I did was sit with this mysterious character and really lean into more of a Fine Art approach with her.

Guy Senior Photoshoot on the
shores of Lexington and in the forest of Port Huron

Marysville Senior Photographer

senior photoshoot in abadoned building.jpg

There was a time when I considered not photographing Senior guys anymore, just focusing on the girl Seniors. Girls always seemed more excited and more involved when it came to their shoot. I wanted to create images for people who appreciated them, and guys always said they never cared. That was until a few years ago when I photographed a Senior guy with the same old story- who’s mom had called and told me her son didn’t care at all about getting his portraits taken, but it was important to her.
Like any shoot I ever do, it’s my main priority, I’m there to create something memorable and impacting for not only those being photographed but those viewing the photos too. And that’s what I did with that shoot, for mom, and for him, regardless of what he told me. I also made sure to really take into consideration this Senior’s style, what he was into, who he was, and how he envisioned these, even though he sad he didn’t care.
After seeing his portraits for the first time it was really obvious that wasn’t true. He was so proud of himself and loved each and every image. He just kept commenting on how good he looked and how great the shoot was. That’s when I realized- guys can say and act however they want about this whole process, but just like girls, just like anyone, they want to feel good about themselves, they want to show off what they’ve worked really hard for, and they want to be celebrated in their last year of high school!

Thank god I didn’t stop photographing guy Seniors, because if I had, I would have missed out on the opportunity to photograph this handsome guy! Dylan never expressed to us that he didn't care about his shoot, he was the total opposite, he would smile and agree to almost anything. His mom and sister were also a huge part of the shoot, which was so cute to watch them all together
Dylan is the true definition of a charming guy. He’s a little quiet, he’s got the cutest little smirk, and I think he might even have the tiniest of southern accents some how. His outfits stayed true to his style- chic and simple, but not in a bad way. Some guys just don’t need all of that. He loves the outdoors so we hit up every look we could- woods, water, city, country back roads with an abandoned house. His smile photographed great, but when he rocked that serious face I’m sure young girls hearts were and are still melting.

I’m glad I never trusted those other guys when they said they didn’t care about their Senior Portraits. We’ll continue to photograph guys here just to prove them all wrong- that we can and we will make you swoon over your own pictures and be damn proud of yourself when you’re done with your shoot with us. Because whether these guys like it or not, we all need a reminder of all that we have to offer, and portraits are a powerful way of visually expressing that.

Pulling Mandrakes at Hogwarts during Herbology Class

Paper Boy style Vintage Portraits

“Mandrake, or Mandragora, is used to return those who have been transfigured to their original state. It’s also quite dangerous. The Mandrake’s cry is fatal to anyone who hears it.”
— Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets

I am (and not so secretly, may I add) obsessed with Harry Potter. I mean, I flew all the way to Europe just to go to The Studio Tour and took a special trip to Florida not for the sunshine, but specifically for The Wizarding World. I don’t think it’s becoming a problem in my day to day life, but I can’t be too sure. haha
Nicki, little Corbin’s mom equally loves HP and wanted to do a 2 part session for his 6 (ish) month session. So we did a Mandrake syle set up just for her, and an adorable vintage set for the rest of the family to enjoy.
We set him up in our slightly over grown (we’ve been busy, ok!) garden and made a little version of the Herbology classroom. Corbin did GREAT! He even munched on some greens for the full experience. What a stinker.
I was sad when I had to tear down the set, so the sign still stands in my garden!
Next Mom changed him into adorable little old man suspenders and a cap and we went out and just sat in the tall grass in the back of the studio and played with all the old things I collect as a hobby and blame it on my job so I can keep collecting. Again, he did amazing. His cute, different expression... we captured so many different sides to him!

Port Huron Senior Spring Session

A Senior Photoshoot in studio and on location

Hiding among the Spring blossoms

port huron high school senior photographer.jpg

A sweet girl with fantastic hair and a sassy fur baby- all those things make for a killer Senior Photoshoot.
Alex is Class of 2017. When most Seniors do their shoot in Summer or Fall, she waited for Spring and it was perfect!    We started the adventure off by doing some hair whips in the studio, then fanning out all those curls over her music sheets. I’m sorry, but when you come to me with gorgeous, thick locks like that you must allow me to 1- touch them 2- continue to talk about them 3- show them off.
Next we drove 10 mins out into the middle of nowhere where we could get some nice grungy shots under a bridge next to the river and let her Huskey pup run wild! Angel, Alex’s mom, was there too. She was our lookout for when cars drove over the bridge, and to let us know we wouldn’t be dying, because when you’re UNDER the bridge and a car drives over, the sound makes you think you’re sure you’re about to die in that moment. haha She gracefully made her way in cute ankle boots over wobbly sharp rocks, which Elores, my assistant, would warn us if we were about to die on or not too, testing to see how wobbly they were before we got there! As I said before- it’s going to be amazing, I never promised it was going to be easy. And that’s why we call this an experience, not just a shoot.
When we pulled up we opened our doors to the most beautiful overgrown bush I have ever seen, full of beautiful pink and white blossoms. Thank you mother nature- this will work stunningly for our black dress outfit with pink and silver balloons! And of course, we plucked off some blossoms and put them in her hair.
We finished the shoot off tucked away in the trees just as the sun was setting. Alex’s adorable smile and easy going attitude made for the cutest casual shots I’ve ever taken. Just her, as she is in that moment, never to be the same again, captured in the sunset before graduating. So bittersweet.
