Port Huron Senior Spring Session

A Senior Photoshoot in studio and on location

Hiding among the Spring blossoms

port huron high school senior photographer.jpg

A sweet girl with fantastic hair and a sassy fur baby- all those things make for a killer Senior Photoshoot.
Alex is Class of 2017. When most Seniors do their shoot in Summer or Fall, she waited for Spring and it was perfect!    We started the adventure off by doing some hair whips in the studio, then fanning out all those curls over her music sheets. I’m sorry, but when you come to me with gorgeous, thick locks like that you must allow me to 1- touch them 2- continue to talk about them 3- show them off.
Next we drove 10 mins out into the middle of nowhere where we could get some nice grungy shots under a bridge next to the river and let her Huskey pup run wild! Angel, Alex’s mom, was there too. She was our lookout for when cars drove over the bridge, and to let us know we wouldn’t be dying, because when you’re UNDER the bridge and a car drives over, the sound makes you think you’re sure you’re about to die in that moment. haha She gracefully made her way in cute ankle boots over wobbly sharp rocks, which Elores, my assistant, would warn us if we were about to die on or not too, testing to see how wobbly they were before we got there! As I said before- it’s going to be amazing, I never promised it was going to be easy. And that’s why we call this an experience, not just a shoot.
When we pulled up we opened our doors to the most beautiful overgrown bush I have ever seen, full of beautiful pink and white blossoms. Thank you mother nature- this will work stunningly for our black dress outfit with pink and silver balloons! And of course, we plucked off some blossoms and put them in her hair.
We finished the shoot off tucked away in the trees just as the sun was setting. Alex’s adorable smile and easy going attitude made for the cutest casual shots I’ve ever taken. Just her, as she is in that moment, never to be the same again, captured in the sunset before graduating. So bittersweet.

A photoshoot with icebergs

Native vibes in the middle of winter

Photography on the frozen shores of Lake Huron

It was below freezing, winds over 20 mph, and I decided to take a drive to the beach. Something just pulled me there.
If you find yourself in Michigan in the winter it's worth it to drive to the shores of Lake Huron (by Port Huron, we're on the East Side of the state) and check out the beach. You never know what you'll find. Open water, flat ice, old snow and sand mixed together, frozen pieces floating down with the current, little ice caves, or huge "icebergs" from where the waves just keep crashing up on shore, freezing into these huge mounds. Every year is different and unique.
Our version of icebergs and icecaps are what I found that day. The little video above shows you what I stumbled upon.
I parked my jeep and headed towards the beach. The wind hitting my face was more than cold, it was almost as if it was forcing me to close my eyes while it slapped me across the face. I could see the wind also making huge waves that were hitting the ice so hard they were flying up over the tops of them, at least 15+ feet in the air. I knew I didn't want to stay long, but I knew I HAD to come back. You can't see natural beauty like that and let it go unnoticed.

frozen back in Port Huron Michigan Lake Huron

A few days later my assistants and I piled back in the jeep and headed back to the beach. With all my camera gear strapped to my back the girls also had an overwhelming amount a fur. We decided we wanted to all be wearing vintage fur coats for the shoot.
Less than 2 minutes there we start exploring the area and Taylor falls in. One wrong step and she's up to her knee in water. She's done for. One thing you should know about the frozen shores of our beaches- they are unpredictable. They might look like they've been frozen for months but mother nature can cause miracles overnight.
Taylor takes off to warm her toes and Elores and I stay out to get a few shots.
This glamorous vision of expensive fur coats in front of this ice quickly turned to something more organic, more native, almost tribal. Elores started to take on this wild, mountain woman feel and we just ran with that. Take a look.

We did swap places for a second, Elores getting some shots of me (that I edited back in the studio later) before we ran back to the Jeep. I ripped off my coats (yes it was so cold I was wearing 2) down to my tank and wrapped myself up in the blanket, which was actually incredibly warm, and I just lived in that moment, in the sunshine and cool air, while she snapped a few photos.

Marysville senior photoshoot

the Professional side of senior portraits

math guru, drum line musician meets fashion model

marysville high school senior photographer.jpg

Like a paint brush, I watch as Grant creates a visual masterpiece with numbers, letters, and shapes on the white board. Just like an artist he is creating something deeper than what most will see or understand. Where I see black marks that most of us might be able to identify as math, Grant sees the future. And I’m beyond thankful that while looking at him, I also see the future, and realize that because of him, and people like him, our world is going to continue to get better.
Grant has passion, a drive to look deeper, the ability to problem solve, and a willingness to share that with others. I was lucky enough to be one of the ones he’s shared his talents with, so I can say first hand- this guy is going places.
Grant and his amazing mom came to my studio to plan his session and were adamant- they wanted unique, custom, out of the box perspectives, and something that reflected who Grant was, and also what his mom saw in and around him. Grant just wanted to make sure we incorporated his love for Math.
Together we created this senior session that shows Grant as the true professional he was meant to be- suit and all. We then changed it up, loosened it up, and celebrated who he is as young musician and drummer. After that I watched as he turned in to this model, brushing the hair back as it was blowing in the wind. And lastly something casual to capture him simply and honestly as he is at this age.
So AJBC + Grant (and his sweet mom) + ( math + drums + cityscapes + grunge) = 1 awesome Senior Session of 2016. Take a look at a few shots:
