Caleigh's Winter Senior Portraits- coffee, snowflakes, and dancing in tunnels

high school photoshoot winter cold.jpg

Caleigh is only a couple of weeks away from graduation. We squeezed in her Senior Couture Photoshoot in late Spring, which still means snow for us photographers in Michigan.
We started the shoot out in the studio. Chic and modern, yet still natural. When I used to think of “studio” portraits I used to think of boring, overly posed, basic portraits, but not anymore. I love movement and emotion and that is highlighted beautifully in the studio with such a simplistic approach. Not that you guys care but I also just got the biggest, most glorious lighting set up for the studio so the light looks incredibly natural even when we shoot at night now! Yay!
After that we snuck outside to get a few shots tucked away in the pine trees. The snow was just starting to come down and it was perfect for these fun outdoor shots, and look how cute she is with that fur hood on!
Next we traveled to down town Port Huron where the backdrop was mute, foggy, and had such a somber feel to it. Right on the water, it would have been perfect for a pirate scene in a movie. The rain boots and that pop of red was perfect here! When the flakes REALLY started to come down Caleigh changed and we took shelter in an old  train tunnel! This location has morphed over the years- I remember shooting here when it was full of graffiti and train tracks. Now it’s cleaned up but it still pairs awesome with her leather jacket for a edgy city girl look.
At this point in the shoot Caleigh was used to us making her dance, do hair flips, spin, laugh, and she was really starting to work the camera. I know it’s hard to drop that guard but once you do in front of my camera it’s beautiful! I won’t push you to that point, but we do our best to effortlessly and naturally pull it out of you!
This is honestly why our Couture Collection is so awesome- because of the diversity in outfits, locations, and because of the time together! It’s easy to see after the first 30 mins, and especially after an hour, the confidence that starts to come out and the personality that starts to show!
The last thing we did was celebrate our shoot with some Starbucks coffee, and that’s also where we shot the last outfit. With a little creativity and an artist's eye we were able to work around the people and the chaos to grab some really stunning images.

I absolutely love the portraits that we create with you, but honestly, the adventure of the shoot is just as important to us, because images will spark memories of the day, and we want you to look at these images years from now and relive the whole experience, relive how fun it was, how amazing you looked, and how free, confident and beautiful you felt!
The days of- we went to a studio, I got my pictures taken, here they are- are SO not what we’re here for.
I hope these images evoke laughter about how many times I asked Caleigh to flip her hair or spin for me! I hope recalling how HARD it was snowing and how cold it was will make them remember not only the time, the place, how it felt, how it smelled, how it looked, but also the moment and who she was at 17 years old, graduating high school, because they'll never get that time back, and it deserves to be preserved .

A photoshoot with icebergs

Native vibes in the middle of winter

Photography on the frozen shores of Lake Huron

It was below freezing, winds over 20 mph, and I decided to take a drive to the beach. Something just pulled me there.
If you find yourself in Michigan in the winter it's worth it to drive to the shores of Lake Huron (by Port Huron, we're on the East Side of the state) and check out the beach. You never know what you'll find. Open water, flat ice, old snow and sand mixed together, frozen pieces floating down with the current, little ice caves, or huge "icebergs" from where the waves just keep crashing up on shore, freezing into these huge mounds. Every year is different and unique.
Our version of icebergs and icecaps are what I found that day. The little video above shows you what I stumbled upon.
I parked my jeep and headed towards the beach. The wind hitting my face was more than cold, it was almost as if it was forcing me to close my eyes while it slapped me across the face. I could see the wind also making huge waves that were hitting the ice so hard they were flying up over the tops of them, at least 15+ feet in the air. I knew I didn't want to stay long, but I knew I HAD to come back. You can't see natural beauty like that and let it go unnoticed.

A few days later my assistants and I piled back in the jeep and headed back to the beach. With all my camera gear strapped to my back the girls also had an overwhelming amount a fur. We decided we wanted to all be wearing vintage fur coats for the shoot.
Less than 2 minutes there we start exploring the area and Taylor falls in. One wrong step and she's up to her knee in water. She's done for. One thing you should know about the frozen shores of our beaches- they are unpredictable. They might look like they've been frozen for months but mother nature can cause miracles overnight.
Taylor takes off to warm her toes and Elores and I stay out to get a few shots.
This glamorous vision of expensive fur coats in front of this ice quickly turned to something more organic, more native, almost tribal. Elores started to take on this wild, mountain woman feel and we just ran with that. Take a look.

We did swap places for a second, Elores getting some shots of me (that I edited back in the studio later) before we ran back to the Jeep. I ripped off my coats (yes it was so cold I was wearing 2) down to my tank and wrapped myself up in the blanket, which was actually incredibly warm, and I just lived in that moment, in the sunshine and cool air, while she snapped a few photos.

Christmas Minis 2014 by AJBC Photography (Port Huron Michigan Photographer)

We survived Christmas!! We survived the holiday season!!
We even captured some sweet moments at the end of 2014 in the middle of all the chaos.
All these amazing people were photographed in the same day in the same spot! I offered 3 different looks this year for Christmas and I loved it- the rustic at home for the holidays look, the clean crisp white backdrop, and the vibrant outdoors. As you can tell they all ROCKED every space, every look. I am so lucky to have so many amazing clients in my life and to have such an amazing space to host events like this in. Our new home and the new studio space / 20 acres of yard is an unbelievable breath of fresh air! We sure did end on a really, really, REALLY good note this year. See for yourself-

I'm Wide Awake | Stylized Winter Session

I'm Wide Awake | Stylized Winter Session

Very rarely do I get time to do something for me. We were in the middle of moving, life was crazier than it had been in months, it was the worst time to take two seconds out of my day to just play. That's when I KNEW this session was something I HAD to do. You should never be too busy to do things that are good for your soul.Taylor and I had been planning this session for a few weeks, waiting for the weather to break, waiting for me to make the feather jacket for her wardrobe, waiting on everything to be perfect. Another lesson that I learned during this- If you always wait for things to be "perfect" you will never do them. So on a a 20 degree, windy, winter day we headed out to capture a vision I had swirling in my mind. It felt so good to let go, be me, have no expectations, no results I HAD to get. It was just me, my model, and the camera. This is by far one of my favorite sessions I have EVER done. I find that when I am truly allowed to let go, I fall in love with my craft all over again. As time passes this year I am learning "photography" all over again. I am learning ME all over again, and it feels refreshing. I know not everyone will follow me on this journey, and that's ok, but I want you to take a look at what it looks like before you turn back:

Special thanks to Taylor, my beautiful model, for helping me bring my vision to life and for providing the remaining wardrobe. You allowed me to feel alive again.... that means more to me than you can ever imagine.
