Marysville High School Senior takes center stage-literally

AJBC-Photography-marysville-michigan-photographer.jpg

Picture this. A lifeguard on duty. A hot, blonde bombshell walking by. It’s almost like an old Bay Watch scene except for if you look closely there’s a family in the background drowning, being attacked by a shark because the lifeguard is too busy literally sweeping the young beauty off her feet and taking her away.

This is mom’s vision for her son’s Senior Session. Man do I love creative people.
Ok, so the idea got shot down by Dad and by her son, but still… it was epic, and hilarious, and told me they were hoping for something different. Just maybe not THAT different. haha

Meet Austin. He’s a Marysville High School Senior who’s involved in every possible sport imaginable along with being ridiculously smart. I had the opportunity to photograph his brother last year and work with his awesome, imaginative parents. I was excited to do it again this year.
When we got together we brainstormed and came out withsome key things we wanted to cover- the easy going guy on the beach, the nice natural shots, downtown fashion, a hectic sports set up including everything he does and then a fabulous, egotistical professional shot that literally puts him center stage.
The day was jam packed. We were changing clothes in the car, chasing sunsets, shooting outside in the dark, and running around a theatre trying to get all of our shots before they booted us out.
Check out how it all came together-

Garage Girl goes Pin Up

Garage Girl goes Pin Up

She's a true garage girl. Her and her husband own a great shop in downtown Port Huron.
She’s also the beautiful girl next door- there’s not that awkward moment of feeling like you have to get to know her for ages, I instantly adored her.
And now she’s adding Pin Up to the list.

The studio held a pin up event with an old retro chevy truck- something we haven’t done in 3 years. Well, when you own a shop, your husband is a grease monkey, and there’s a sweet old truck up for grabs- you go for it!

Jackie called and we met. Again- I adored her. Her personality is huge, one that once it’s gone, you kind of feel a little let down for the rest of the day. haha She told me about her life, her family, and how well this tied in with them. She was pretty adamant she didn’t want to go outside of her comfort box or transform in to someone she wasn’t for the sake of the shoot, she wanted to stay true to who she was during it all. I like girls like that.

When it came to the shoot my first reaction is to have girls get in that fierce mode, giving me that powerful serious face that transmits in to confidence and sexiness but I couldn’t do that with Jackie. It’s not that she couldn’t pull it off, because she could, and she did, but.. it didn’t feel right, it didn’t feel like her. She had to be smiling. That was her. THAT was HER confidence and her sexy side, no need to try and pull it out of somewhere else.

The best part of the session was how much we laughed when we did ask her to be serious. It was almost impossible, which is awesome. But we nailed it, and her hubby got a pretty fabulous Christmas gift out of the deal.  Don’t you agree?

Girlfriend + Boyfriend turn Fiances in front of my lens- Port Huron Engagement Photographer

12 years ago Chris and I sat in Art Class together in high school, talking about things that probably weren’t important but made us laugh. These days we talk on the phone about how he’s met the girl of his dreams and she has no idea he wants to propose to her during a photo shoot with me. We still laugh, but it’s about more serious things, like when he says, “If she says no, this will probably be the only time you will see a grown man beg, but just keep shooting.”

The big day comes and we meet at the top of Beards Hill. Chris pulls up in his huge welding truck. Becca hops out of her huge truck- beautiful, curly auburn hair, white dress, finished off with cowboy boots. It’s obvious Chris has met his match.

She thinks we’re just here to get nice pictures of the two of them; he knows his life is about to change once we get to the bottom of the hill and I give him the signal.

It rains on and off the whole time. We have the whole hills to ourselves and hide out under the canopies. When we reach the bottom the rain kicks up the mist, but this is the moment, and nothing else matters. We convince her this will probably be our last stop, and to just wait while we get everything set up.

My assistant Taylor and I decide we’re going to perch them on top of a big rock jutting out of the water and proceed to take awkward photos of ourselves, as we always do, to check our light. We giggle the whole time thinking, "I know something you don't know!" on top of being so excited for Chris. When everything is set, we have them come out and get “posed.”

Chris knows his cue- I tell him to “pose” on one knee. Becca looks at me and at him as if that’s the most awkward pose I could suggest until… the ring comes out.

After that there was a lot of yelling, squealing, laughing, kissing, and hugging, but the best part was when she was so in shock she turned around to run away and found herself with nowhere to go on top of the rock.
Here's a taste of what we mean..

Live Proposal during Photoshoot in Port Huron, MI

It was a beautiful moment to watch unfold. To be asked to be a part of it was truly magical. You can’t help but smile the whole time, to the point of your cheeks hurting.

We ended the shoot right where we started, back on top of the hill. Many others wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the shots, but they will always be able to. It’s the moment they went from being boyfriend and girlfriend, to an engaged couple, soon to be husband and wife, forever.

3 years of Christmas with 3 beautiful kids

Whimsical, Cozy, and Classic Christmas portraits
to make your heart flutter

For the last 3 years I had these kids come to me for Christmas Minis. I couldn’t decide what year to show you, so I’m doing them ALL, because I LOVE all 3 of them, so so much. And I bet next year I’ll be making this story even longer, because they are obviously adorable and Mom has a way of making my heart skip a beat with her wardrobe skills! Not to mention the dark brown eyes and curly hair… ugh. Life is unfair that we can’t all be this stinkin’ cute!

Year 1- Whimsical Outdoor Christmas
Ok, so if I had to be honest, this might, by a tiny bit, be my favorite out of all 3 years, but that’s really too hard to say for sure. Me and Mom have this secret love for all things vintage when it comes to photos. So naturally I built my set to suit, and she just took it one step further making her kids (only 2 at the time) look like they stepped right out of a Charles Dickens novel. Swoon…

Year 2- Cozy at Home Christmas.
We had a big comfy chair, Christmas bed time stories, a fire burning, pure Christmas coziness. Due to the weather we tucked ourselves inside and it made for such a warm feeling.

Year 3- Classy Christmas
And I now introduce to you to the youngest little Jarbo. They are now a family of 3!
This year was all about classic yet fancy holiday style. And as you know- these kids ALWAYS have style. We kicked it up a notch with just the right amount glitter and sparkles to make it fancy, and the kids took care of the rest.
They are totally at the age where their personalities are bursting out, and it shows here! They just melt my heart!
