White Rock in Lake Huron, Michigan

An artistic adventure out to the sacred
Indian Rock- White Rock.

A sacred rock in Lake Huron marking the divide in territory between the white men and Indians back in the 1800s still sits in the water today, poking only it's head above water, known as White Rock.To show their appreciation of nature to the Great Spirit, Gitchi Manitou, Indians would take their game and food sacrificed and place it on the rock. People still make offerings on this rock today. In years to pass the Indians warned the white men to not trespass on the sacred rock, but they didn't all obey the call. The tale tells of White men arriving in a canoe and only 1 man who remained in the water surviving, while the others who went on the rock to dance were struck by lightening.

40 minutes later and we arrive by truck to the entry point of White Rock. What should be stairs leading down to the water is now an outlook spot with orange fencing and a sign that reads STAIRS CLOSED, do not enter. You can tell that the stairs that reach 30 ft above the shoreline are pulling away from their main structure and have a slight lean to them. We decide the risk is worth it and we hop the fence with our paddle boards. 4 flights down and we reach the empty beach, with White Rock off in the distance. It may be small but it's presence is mighty.

We turn around to realize our rebellion has encourage others to follow our lead and we're no longer alone. That all changes when we push off shore and into the Lake. We are again detached from what feels like the rest of the world.

We paddle out 20 ft, 50 ft, 100ft from shore. Every push through the water gets us closer and closer to that feeling of freedom, with that feeling of familiarity still not too far behind us, as bottom is close and the crystal clear water allows us to enjoy what's underfoot. I watch as the birds perched on top of the rock scatter in unison. 1/2 mile out and White Rock is now directly in front of us and we have a choice to make- to trespass or not. We've already dismissed what the White Man tried to tell us and trespassed to get to the Lake, but in this moment I trust the Indians more than the White Man... I trust their tales, and I don't see them intimidating me with false fear. They know to respect the Land, and while I am here I will listen to them.

With that being said I had this urge to show my thanks to the land too and in an essence "sacrifice myself" near the rock to nature and all that it has given me in this life. I entered the water, stood near the rock, and raised my arms to Mother Nature. I give myself to you. Thank You for your gifts.

The wind blew and we fought to paddle back, but we made it, back up the leaning stairs, back over the orange fence, and back into the White Man's territory- where they tell you to stay off a leaning staircase for your own safety, but they will trespass on a sacred rock. Oh, we have so much to learn. I'll take my chances on the stairs, boys.

And thennnnn you just have to release your inner fashionista while floating on top of the waves of then lake.

Mother Nature and New Mother collide for Maternity Session

Summer Maternity shoot floating
on the water's surface

Natural Beauty at Sunset in Port Huron, MI

Is ‘becoming a mother’ something you were born to do, or something you longed to do? It’s a natural, beautiful, inspiring process- creating an entire human with just your own body.
Claudia was completely embracing this moment in her life and was ready to celebrate it as the organic and ethereal process it is through a photo shoot!
While designing the shoot I wanted to work with nature and have it feel a bit fairy tale, a bit fashion, and a bit serene. Floating her on top of the water’s surface gave us that soft, maternal feeling. After that we embraced the raw aspect of pregnancy by showing off Claudia’s beautiful curves and enhancing her effortless beauty by stripping away all the unnecessary things and leaving her with just herself and that feeling of motherhood. This was also a graceful way to show off all of her artwork as well. Lastly we chased the sun as it set and celebrated soon to be baby Rory in a field of day lilies as the orange glow engulfed her.
A few weeks later 1 became 2 and Claudia was officially a mother to a newborn.
This experience was such an elegant way to end half this cycle... the end of pregnancyto enter into motherhood.

Mickey Mouse style Birthday Party Portraits

Young Family Session by Port Huron Photographer

1 year photoshoot with watermelon michigan child photographer.jpg

Mickey Mouse ears and balloons every where! My baby book and playing with Mommy and Daddy. And to top it off- watermelon slices bigger than my head!
I’m sure these were William’s thoughts the day of his One Year shoot!! I mean, it sounds like a dream day for any little boy turning the big O-N-E!
We drove out to Goodells Park early in the morning to set up on a cute, old farm house front porch. Only to find the biggest fair of our area was happening- the 4H Fair!   I’ll skip the long version, but to sum it up we drove the 30 mins unknowingly, didn’t have enough cash to pay the entry fee, scrounged up money from our purses and vehicle, rehearsed my sob story, and a very, very nice gentlemen let us into the park for $14, instead of the $40 it should have cost. Thank goodness for good people in this world!
Once we FINALLY got in the often barren park was FULL of campers, rides, and FARM ANIMALS!
We had such a nice morning with this little adorable family of 3! We did family portraits, couple portraits and then it was William's time to shine! We busted out the Mickey Mouse ears while he played with balloons and ended the shoot with juicy, huge pieces of watermelon. His little hands and mouth were determined to take it all on and it ended in the stickiest, wettest, cutest mess you’ve ever seen.
   Take a look!
Oh, and of course afterwards we went a looked at all the cute farm animals, because, honestly, who could resist?!

Pulling Mandrakes at Hogwarts during Herbology Class

Paper Boy style Vintage Portraits

“Mandrake, or Mandragora, is used to return those who have been transfigured to their original state. It’s also quite dangerous. The Mandrake’s cry is fatal to anyone who hears it.”
— Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets

I am (and not so secretly, may I add) obsessed with Harry Potter. I mean, I flew all the way to Europe just to go to The Studio Tour and took a special trip to Florida not for the sunshine, but specifically for The Wizarding World. I don’t think it’s becoming a problem in my day to day life, but I can’t be too sure. haha
Nicki, little Corbin’s mom equally loves HP and wanted to do a 2 part session for his 6 (ish) month session. So we did a Mandrake syle set up just for her, and an adorable vintage set for the rest of the family to enjoy.
We set him up in our slightly over grown (we’ve been busy, ok!) garden and made a little version of the Herbology classroom. Corbin did GREAT! He even munched on some greens for the full experience. What a stinker.
I was sad when I had to tear down the set, so the sign still stands in my garden!
Next Mom changed him into adorable little old man suspenders and a cap and we went out and just sat in the tall grass in the back of the studio and played with all the old things I collect as a hobby and blame it on my job so I can keep collecting. Again, he did amazing. His cute, different expression... we captured so many different sides to him!
