Deadlift and dropdead gorgeous- a woman's fitness journey

port huron michigan health fitness photography.jpg

Some people you just have an instant connection with and you’ll make sure you do whatever it takes to make sure they have every opportunity to express themselves.
That’s what happened with Leigh. She came to the studio and told me about how hard she had been working to get fit and wanted to show that off in her photos.
Strong women make me happy. They make me proud. And they remind me of all that we are capable of. Don’t let your femininity limit you, let it expand you. Let is set you up to break the rules and knock down stereo types.
I was so excited that she had found me and trusted me with her vision, and her self expression. We talked a lot before the actual session, about wardrobe, about her look, about what she wanted these images to say about her. Our first idea of what we thought was right for her slowly morphed in to what I KNOW is right.
We decided we didn’t need a crazy location, we just needed her. And at the end of the day, isn’t that all we really need in order to define ourselves? We don’t need help by using fancy things to define us and we don’t need to hide behind anything. We need who we are and our story, and the will to tell people about it.
So here’s Leigh’s story. She’s a mom. She’s a wife. She’s strong. And she can deadlift weights like it’s her fricken job.
These are the type of women you need to watch out for, and allow to motivate you.

1 year old photoshoot for the magazines

a baby fashion shoot

I may be partial, seeing as though I’m friends with this little guy’s parents but- oh my god…. REALLY!? Isn’t he the cutest? He really knows how to work the camera, and the ladies for that matter. I know he had my heart melting!
My husband scrounged up some old wood out of of yard and we built this teepee for the session. The background is actually a pallet wall we made in our mudroom. I swear- you can shoot anywhere with the right vision! So we took some shots, played the drums, cuddle with Frank (the purple monkey) and then changed.
Outfit 2- can you say HELLO Baby Gap! I can’t tell is this is his music video debut or his first tv commercial. Man does Maasai make 1 year old look good!
   See what I mean-

Marysville High School Senior takes center stage-literally

AJBC-Photography-marysville-michigan-photographer.jpg

Picture this. A lifeguard on duty. A hot, blonde bombshell walking by. It’s almost like an old Bay Watch scene except for if you look closely there’s a family in the background drowning, being attacked by a shark because the lifeguard is too busy literally sweeping the young beauty off her feet and taking her away.

This is mom’s vision for her son’s Senior Session. Man do I love creative people.
Ok, so the idea got shot down by Dad and by her son, but still… it was epic, and hilarious, and told me they were hoping for something different. Just maybe not THAT different. haha

Meet Austin. He’s a Marysville High School Senior who’s involved in every possible sport imaginable along with being ridiculously smart. I had the opportunity to photograph his brother last year and work with his awesome, imaginative parents. I was excited to do it again this year.
When we got together we brainstormed and came out withsome key things we wanted to cover- the easy going guy on the beach, the nice natural shots, downtown fashion, a hectic sports set up including everything he does and then a fabulous, egotistical professional shot that literally puts him center stage.
The day was jam packed. We were changing clothes in the car, chasing sunsets, shooting outside in the dark, and running around a theatre trying to get all of our shots before they booted us out.
Check out how it all came together-

2015 recap

Two Thousand Fifteen.
Where do I begin?

Port Huron Photographer- Family, Boudoir, Weddings

All these beautiful, unique, life changing squares before me.

My gosh. Every single one holds a face that has made me in to the artist, photographer, and person I am at this very moment, after another full long year of connecting with people through squares and rectangles that define who they are in just 1 moment of time.

The beginning of 2015 started out with snow, love, pin ups, and models. I got to photograph people in the first few months of this year that would become friends of mine, have babies, get married, go on to be successful in their careers, win awards… Every person in those first squares are so much more than faces to me when I look back.

At the very beginning of March my husband, Jake, and I went to Las Vegas for the biggest Photo Expo in, possibly, the world, WPPI. On the plain ride home I exploded a small notebook with ideas, inspiration, things I wanted to change, and ideas I wanted to create. That’s when The Revolution was born.

Around May I took about 1 1/2 months off of work. I go through phases with my art, like we all do in life, but at that point I had realized that, if I didn’t make a change NOW I wasn’t going to be able to make that HUGE jump in to the art that I've always been drawn to, that really makes me happy and keeps me feeling alive. I had to make a cut in the timeline, so I disappeared for a bit.

You will see a lot of little squares that are of me this year. It’s not because I love myself that much but I find that inverting inwards helps me understand situations better. Sometimes I find messages to myself in my work before I’m even fully aware there’s a message to be found. Through my self-portraits I pushed past what I was comfortable with, what I thought I knew, and started over. I let go of what was holding me back and pushed towards what made me happy. I found myself outside more, exploring more, and having a better understand of what actually made me happy when it came to creating for others.

From that time The Pillow and The Pond and Floating through the Veil was born, as was another piece I am still waiting to release.

After that the squares starts to shift back to everyone else. The people who keep my art alive- you.
We did so many gorgeous seniors, hot bridal boudoir, families, even a few babes! We got to experience being with hundreds of people for weddings, big commercial shoots, I even climbed 100 feet up in to a giant Michigan Sequoia to get some shots of climbers. You rolled around in leaves, climbed up and down hills with us, got sassy with an old retro truck, sun gazed, and threw around flour. You laid in ponds, jumped on trampolines in sweaty haunted buildings, and stuck antlers in your hair.

You made 2015 beautiful, truly, unremarkably beautiful. And I thank you for that. Over and over and over again.

Here’s to another years of beauty, stories, and fairytales brought to life.
