Golden Senior Session at Sunset

Running Free and Beautiful in Lexington, MI

   The first time I photographed Katelyn she was whipping her long curls at sunset, running on the beach in a white undress, and splashing like a young, free spirit.
   The second time I photographed Katelyn she was kicking and punching through pieces of wood and high kicking what easily could have been a tall man's throat.

   Talk about girls being made of sugar AND spice. Dang.

   Katelyn's session was also the ONLY session that year that had to be rescheduled because of rain. THREE times! And I'm not talking cute rain, I'm talking down pour and we lost power- rain. And we STILL ended up shooting in the rain (I secretly think she's unknowingly doing rain dances in her sleep) but it worked out beautifully.  

   She even showed me and my assistant how to chop through boards, which of course makes you feel like a bad-ass. And any day ending in you feeling like a bad-ass is a good day in my book.

   This part of the session that I want to show off, seeing how free she is in it, it makes me unbearably excited for summer. Knee deep in Lake Huron, sand all over our gear, chasing the sun, and everything has that glow. Running barefoot off into the sunset, wildflowers in her hair- we had so much fun with you, Katelyn.

London, Ontario Maternity Photo-Shoot

Family Session at Springbank Park in London

Mommy and Me, Daddy and I, Maternity, Family,
and Big Brother Photoshoot all in 1!

   11 years old and I knew no one where I had just moved to, except for the girl who rode her bike through my neighborhood. It seemed like every summer after that we would accidentally meet up and ride through the neighborhood at least once together.
   15 years old and we were at the beach every single day that summer. Almost every night we would have a sleep over. My bike ride friend had quickly became my best friend, and we went through all the typical growing up stuff together- boys, crappy boys, dances, bad dancing, shopping, the first time house party, driving, and laughing way into the night. She had this outer tough shell that was hilariously funny because when you actually knew her she would laugh at anything and was that friend you could count on, for years.
   16 years later and that same girl is now an amazing, caring mother of (soon to be) 2 kids and has a kind man by her side to take the adventure with. She’s one of those cool moms I love- she takes it seriously, but she knows life can’t be that serious, which is turning her son (and I’m sure her daughter too) into the smartest, most caring, truly unique little individual.
   She hopped the border when she got older and moved to Canada, so that gives me the perfect excuse to explore new areas when we go visit her! This time she took us to Springbank Park, which is huge, this is only a little slice of it, but what’s special about it is the last shot of our night was in the same exact spot where we shot the last shot of the night at their FIRST maternity session.

Celebrating her Beauty with a Photoshoot

Celebrating 20 years of life

Celebrating her body and her confidence

   Twenty. 20.
   It's a number that's all of exciting, terrifying, and validating. Turning 20 releases you from your teens, springs you into pure adulthood, but also still leaves you young.
   This is Brooke on THE DAY she turned 20.
   I met Brooke a couple of years ago. She messaged me saying she loved to model and wanted to build her portfolio with me, so she booked a shoot and together we did a stunning night shoot and artistic / vintage indoor shoot.
   When she got a hold of me earlier last year saying she wanted to do ANOTHER shoot, I was SO excited! I LOVE working with out of the box people. Since the last shoot she moved to Grand Rapids, so we did all of our meetings over facebook messanger video chat.
   The thing I remember most from that conversation was her saying, "I'm so excited. I just really need a day like this, for me." It stuck out to me because the experience of her getting photographed was just as exciting to her as the portraits she was going to be getting back, which is pretty much my goal. To gift an experience, memoriesAND beautiful portraits that will outlive you.
  It was the morning of, waking up with no stress because hair and makeup was going to be totally taken care of for her, showing up here with her boyfriend and us just cranking the music, having a dance party, and photographing her and how amazing she looked while doing it. It was the custom set we built for her and then encircling her with greens, tule, and fog from dry ice to make her look like a mystical princess. It was ALL of that that made the day great.
   When she came back to the studio for her viewing she then told me about her deeper reason for doing this... that at age 20 she finally felt comfortable and extremely confident in her body and her skin, and she wanted to celebrate that for herself. I don't know if you've ever read MY blog / self portrait session on this EXACT subject, but THAT is what makes me tick, THAT is what makes me get up in the morning- when women STOP saying sorry, STOP being shy, and embrace who they are, are proud of who they are, and they live life and feel good for THEM, and no one else.
   For her viewing she brought her mom, which after you view the rest of her portraits below you can imagine how hard it was for her to see her baby girl all grown up, and she asked, who are you going to show these to? To which Brooke replied- MYSELF! I did this for myself, I just want to look at ME- LOOK AT ME! AH! To know that her and I could work together to give her that moment makes me know I'm where I should be.
   Ladies- You deserve to know what that feels like. Allow Brooke to inspire you and do something great for yourself, so you have images to look back on when you're 60 from when you turned 20 and can say- Damn. That's ME. LOOK AT ME! And I've only gotten better from that day forward. Start a Revolution for yourself!

Professional dancer builds portfolio

   Hannah has been dancing longer than some of my clients have been alive. That's when you know you LOVE something. Your whole life is about it.
   She is following her passion and perusing a career as a Professional Dancer. Nothing makes me happier than watching someone embrace what they were truly meant to do with their life!
   She told me finding a photographer that could give her the full impact of movement she was looking for in her images was a challenge, and that she was so happy to find me. It's the connections like that in life and at AJBC that I live for! So we put our passions together and created something Natural. Beautiful.
   Natural Beauty.
   It was important for her to also include nature. Obviously, if you've seen my work, you know I agree. So my team and I pushed ourselves and our limits in order to make Hannah's session magical, professional, and over the top.
   So take a look and see how we incorporated EVERY Earthly element into her session- Wind, Water, Fire, Earth. It was beautiful to watch Hannah move gracefully through all of it.
